YOKE Sufi Dreams with Shantaraam

For centuries, a mystic order of Sufism has thrived from the far lands of Turkey to the shores of Bombay. Spreading light in every aspect of everyday living. Sufism has seen its impact on the world through the many teachings of its scholars such as Hafiz and Rumi. The teachings of Sufism goes beyond just words and poetry; its combines the teachings of the Quraan with song, chant and celebration. The act of Tasawwuf is defined as going into a state of meditation to bring one closer to the divine. Shantaraam brings the influences of his own homeland and combines them with the elements of modern day electronica and world music to bring you into the Sufi dreaming state. This is a dance journey incorporating instruments often used in ceremonies of Whirling Dervishes and Sufi Chanting.

Helming from an island in the Arabian Gulf (Bahrain) known for being a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, this diversity is heavily reflected in the sound: A fusion of world music, psychedelic soundscapes & dub laden grooves to elevate the human experience.

Shantaraam has toured excessively around the East Coast of Australia and New Zealand, collaborating with live musicians such as Alice Spacedoll, The Funk Shui Collective, Zourouna, and Matiu ‘the hook’ Te huki, often merging the worlds of live and electronic with an improvised approach. Fresh from a Euro tour with Gigs in Dubrovnik, Croatia – Lisbon Portugal – Leeuwarden Holland, the focus has shifted to producing his own material, and collaborating with Middle Eastern and Western Musicians to bridge the divide.

This is an event for movers and shakers of all walks of life; no prior dance skills necessary. We welcome Yokers of all types in their many unique forms. Let’s go on this journey and celebration of life together.

Please endeavor to arrive at 7 so we can open the dance as a group. Doors will close at 8pm. If you are arriving late please enter quietly and refrain from chit chat. Any profit will be put towards expanding this conscious dance network in new and dynamic ways, so YOU can get more out of this collective journey.
